Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQs section which should answer most questions. If you can’t find the answer to your query below, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

I haven’t sung for years, is that a problem?
Our groups and workshops are for everyone, whether you have sung before or not. We have many people join who haven’t sung for 30 years or more. Our Choir Leader will make you feel welcome and give you lots of encouragement and guidance along the way.

Is there an audition to join?
No, there’s no audition and no one is made to sing on their own.

Do you need to be able to read music?
You don’t need to be able to read music as copies of the words to all songs are provided and the songs learnt mainly by ear. There is the option of purchasing the sheet music of the 2-part harmony pieces from the Choir Leader.

I don’t know whether I have a high or low voice.
It doesn’t matter if you’re unsure - you can try out singing with one part and can swap over if it doesn’t suit your voice.

Can I try for free before deciding to join?
Yes, you’re welcome to come along to the first session for free to find out more about VivaVoices. Click here to find out more.

How do I join?
You’ll need to send us a completed booking form with payment. You can download a booking form here or get one from the Choir Leader when you come to the free taster session.

How much does it cost?
The joining fee for each choir and our workshops can be found at the top of the relevant page.

I can’t make it every week, can I pay weekly?
Members pay for the whole term, regardless of how many sessions they attend. It isn’t possible to pay weekly. If you join half way through the term, we may be able to offer you a reduction in the booking fee. Please contact us for details.

Can I join in the middle of the term?
It’s best to join in the first few weeks so that you don’t miss too many rehearsals. It may be possible to join later on in the term, though you should check with us first that there are still places available.

What styles of music do you sing?
We sing a very wide and lively range of music from pop and rock, to easy listening, musicals, classical music, and songs from around the world – everything from Bach to The Beatles and Beyoncé!

Can I request a song?
Yes, the Choir Leader has a sheet for you to write down any requests. We’ll try to include a couple of requests from the group each term.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
It’s a good idea to bring a pen or pencil with you, as well as a bottle of cold water. You’ll find it helpful to keep your music and word sheets together in a folder.

Do we get to perform?
All the groups perform in an informal concert in the last session of each term before an audience of family and friends. All our concerts raise money for charity. You can details of the performances here.

Will I get the chance to sing a solo?
Yes, just let the Choir Leader know you’d like to do a solo.

Do you provide backing tracks of the songs for practice at home?
Due to copyright law, we’re unable to provide backing tracks or recordings of the songs, except for pieces that have been arranged exclusively for VivaVoices.

I’m unable to continue coming to the group, can I have a refund?
We operate a no-refund policy, with the exception of having to withdraw due to a medical condition.
